Sectoral Diversity and Local Employment Growth in France

Mounir Amdaoud, Nadine Levratto

Abstract
This paper investigates how variety affects regional employment growth in France over the period 2004-2015. Starting from the seminal contribution of Frenken et al. (2007), we argue that intra-industry externalities foster employment growth. However, we don’t distinguish yet between the own effect of related variety of the region and that of its neighbourhood. Hence, we suggest that conceptual progress can be made when analysis considers the direct and indirect (neighbourhood) dimension of variety. Our empirical investigations confirm that related variety has a positive effect on employment growth. Moreover, this impact seems to be driven by the endogenous dimension of related variety in growth phase and by exogenous dimension in crisis period. We also find that the negative relationship between unrelated variety and employment growth goes only through the endogenous canal.

Territoires d’industrie : hétérogénéité et convergence ?

Mounir Amdaoud, Nadine Levratto

Abstract
This article aims to explore the nature of employment dynamics in industrial territories in France from 2015 to 2020. Two complementary methods of investigation are deployed. The first rests upon the Markov chain model to analyse the relative growth of industrial areas and measure movements in the distribution of employment rates. The second, more recent, tests the hypothesis of convergence in clubs and completes the previous one by specifying and identifying each territory subject to mobility within the distribution. The results highlight the heterogeneity of growth processes, show the existence of several clubs of industry territories evolving at different rates and conclude the absence of an industry trap. They plead in favour of implementing policies to support the economy at the territorial level.

La résilience des territoires français face à la crise. Une première évaluation de l’ampleur du choc

Lara Abdel Fattah, Mounir Amdaoud

Abstract
This article seeks to measure the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on local employment in metropolitan France. Based on an extensive literature on economic resilience and the first available local data on the number of job losses, we highlight, on the one hand, the differences in the resilience of employment areas in the face of the crisis and, on the other hand, the key explanatory factors behind these disparities. The first econometric results show a significant influence of the density, the level of employment in the industry, the productive structure and the entrepreneurial dynamics of the territory.
However, no relationship was found between employment areas with high levels of excess mortality and those that exhibit large job losses.

Port-city linkages and multi-level hinterlands: the case of France

Mounir Amdaoud, César Ducruet, Marc-Antoine Faure

Abstract
The objective of this research is to examine the similarities between port traffic structure and economic structure of French port cities. Such an exercise is challenged by the core-periphery pattern of the French economy favouring transhipment. Based on the combination of Automated Identification System (AIS) data and employment data, it performs complementary analyses of the mutual specialization between ports and cities. Main results show that while larger cities handle more diversified traffic, the cross-specialization is blurred by the complexity of trade networks and supply chains. We then propose a novel methodology whereby the spatial unit of analysis is enlarged according to the type and volume of port traffic, thus considerably improving the statistical significance and economic meaningfulness of the observed linkages.

Covid-19 : analyse spatiale de l’influence des facteurs socio-économiques sur la prévalence et les conséquences de l’épidémie dans les départements français

Mounir Amdaoud, Giuseppe Arcuri, Nadine Levratto

Abstract
This paper analyses the socio-economic determinants of hospitalizations and death rates related to Covid-19 on the one hand, and the excess mortality observed this year compared to previous ones, on the other. It proposes a territorial approach to these questions thanks to the use of data calculated at the French departments level. The exploratory spatial analysis carried out reveals the heterogeneity and spatial autocorrelation of the disease and its consequences. The use of spatial econometric models, then, allows us to highlight the influence of demographic density, social inequalities, part of blue-collars in the active population and emergency services on the studied phenomena.

Compétences externes et innovation: le cas des firmes de l'industrie manufacturière algérienne

Mounir Amdaoud, Messaoud Zouikri

Abstract
This paper addresses an hypothesis on the contribution of the external capabilities to
the birth of the innovation activity within the firm. The econometric analysis
conducted on a sample of Algerian manufacturing entreprises,
allowed to highlight four robust results which remain significant and stable after
adjustment by various indicators. The main result is that the development of different
firm capabilities was not exclusively originated from an edogenous effort, but also induced by an
exogenous shock resulting from participating to the upgraded firms' program financially
supported by the Algerian government and the European Union. Furthermore,
the improvement of human resources competencies, the use of ICT and the
compliance to performance criteria explain significantly
firm engagement differences in the product innovation activity.
The R&D and firm size as traditional factors seem not to be significant
predictors of innovation capacity in the present case.
